What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy?Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a simple, natural technique that assists the body’s natural healing process, by stimulating the body to repair and rejuvenate an area of the body experiencing pain.Platelets are a natural source of substances promoting growth. They recruit other cells to enhance tissue regeneration and healing. With few side effects or risks, the procedure jump-starts the body’s ability to heal itself. How it works Platelet-rich plasma therapy is easy to perform and takes less than an hour. A few tablespoons of the patient's blood are spun in a centrifuge, concentrating platelets into about a tablespoon of PRP. This is injected into the patient's area of pain. The injection has a concentration of platelets four to ten times greater than the normal concentration in the blood, so there is a faster regeneration and healing. The doctor will discuss these possibilities fully. Side effects may include some pain, burning, and swelling for one to two days. Does PRP therapy work? “Eight weeks after the treatment, the platelet-rich plasma patients noted 60% improvement in their pain scores versus 16% improvement in control patients.” Allan Mishra, MD Published results show that 90% of patients who are facing surgery for chronic tennis elbow can improve with PRP. Studies have shown that mesenchymal stem cells are attracted to the site of PRP injections, releasing many substances causing growth and increasing production of hyaluronic acid in joints. The result is faster healing. For acute injuries, healing can be accelerated by 30 to 50%. How many treatments will be needed? For how long will the treatments be effective? How much does it cost? Each session is $150.00. |
