What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy?

How it works

Platelet-rich plasma therapy is easy to perform and takes less than an hour. A few tablespoons of the patient's blood are spun in a centrifuge, concentrating platelets into about a tablespoon of PRP. This is injected into the patient's area of pain. The injection has a concentration of platelets four to ten times greater than the normal concentration in the blood, so there is a faster regeneration and healing.

Is this therapy the same as cortisone injections?
No, it is completely different. Long-term studies have shown that cortisone injections actually weaken the tissue.

Is PRP therapy safe?
PRP is an extremely safe procedure. The risk is far less than taking Aspirin or Motrin for a lifetime, to alleviate chronic pain temporarily. There is, of course, a slight risk in any medical procedure.

In PRP, the risks and side effects will vary, depending on the area being treated. The doctor will discuss these possibilities fully. Side effects may include some pain, burning, and swelling for one to two days.

The response to treatment depends on one's healing ability. Some people may only need a few treatments while others need five. The average number is three to four.
